The Objective – Prevent disease spread with a smart solution

The primary objective of this project was to develop a reliable solution for measuring water quality, ensuring safer and healthier water resources for communities. A water source management company partnered with Srushty to design an advanced water quality assessment device. This innovative device is intended to identify water contamination, playing a crucial role in preventing illnesses such as diarrhoea, cholera, and typhoid.

The goal was to improve usability by designing a sleek and portable device that can give instant accurate results.

The Challenge – Bulky design

The client’s initial design was bulky and not user-friendly. It also used a mechanism that did not ensure accurate water quality measurements. Srushty was tasked with revamping this design to create a more user-friendly device with improved aesthetics and reliable accuracy, incorporating IoT capabilities.

Mechanical and Industrial Design:

We conducted a user ergonomics study to guide the new design, ensuring that the device meets user needs effectively. Using 3D CAD modeling, we created a streamlined, handheld mechanical enclosure that enhances portability. Additionally, we designed locking mechanisms to ensure the proper positioning of the sensor and color strip, improving measurement accuracy. Throughout this process, we focused on enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the device while ensuring ease of use for a seamless user experience.

Electrical and Electronics Design:

We developed detailed schematics and a PCB layout for the redesigned device, focusing on optimal performance and integration. Key components were carefully selected, including a color sensor for accurate water quality measurement, a Bluetooth module for seamless wireless connectivity, and a battery management system to enhance device efficiency. The electronics were then prototyped to ensure smooth integration with the new design, setting the stage for effective functionality and user experience.

Firmware Development and Mobile App:

We implemented drivers for the color sensor and integrated the Bluetooth stack to facilitate smooth communication between the device and mobile platforms. Additionally, we developed a mobile app that enables real-time data capture and reporting, allowing users to receive instantaneous water quality results directly on their mobile devices. This integration enhances the overall user experience by providing accessible and timely information on water quality.

The Outcome – Accurate water monitoring device


The final product featured a compact, handheld design that provided accurate water quality measurements using color sensing technology. The device was easy to use and offered enhanced data output through a mobile app, meeting the client’s requirements for both functionality and design.
