Engineering a Versatile Dynamometer for Physiotherapy

Developing an IoT powered one of its kind dynamometer for physiotherapy from concept to market.

Background

A dynamometer, colloquially known as a “dyno,” serves as a vital tool for measuring force, torque, or power. Acknowledging the significance of measuring muscle strength in physiotherapy, SrushtyPD embarked on a mission to create a singular, multi-functional Assist Aid device.

Existing products in the market were bulky, and another significant issue was the lack of devices that could perform all functions. Users had to buy multiple devices to measure the strength of different body parts.

Objective

The primary objective is to assess and analyze improvements in muscle strength parameters through a single, versatile device. The parameters should be available to the user in a mobile app.

The challenge

Our engineering service engaged in an extensive exploration of Dynamometer device requirements, covering Industrial Design, Conceptual & Engineering phases, and incorporating Mechanical, Electrical, Firmware, and Software Design components. The focus remained on providing a comprehensive solution for assessing overall body muscle strength.

The project encountered distinct challenges, primarily stemming from the absence of a singular device capable of measuring both arm and leg muscle strength. The client’s requirements posed two crucial challenges:

  • Holistic Muscle Strength Measurement:

The client sought a dynamometer that could comprehensively measure overall body muscle strength in a single device or through the integration of two devices.

  • Precision in Smaller Muscle Assessment:

Additionally, there was a need for the device to measure the muscle strength of smaller muscle groups, such as fingers.

 

The Solution

We offered a solution of precise adduction and abduction measurements for accurate muscle assessment. It includes a complete mechanical design process starting from industrial design selection, aiming to replace multiple devices with one integrated solution. We also provided seamless integration with a mobile app for real-time data analysis

  • Comprehensive Muscle Strength Assessment:

The dynamometer was designed to fulfil the client’s requirement for an all-encompassing device capable of measuring muscle strength in both arm and leg, providing a holistic assessment.

  • Precision in Smaller Muscle Assessment:

The device was adeptly engineered to measure the muscle strength of smaller muscles like fingers, offering a comprehensive evaluation of overall muscle health.

  • BLE OTA Updation:

The inclusion of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Over-The-Air (OTA) updation allowed seamless firmware updates, enhancing the device’s functionality and adaptability.

  • Compact PCB and Schematic Design:

To ensure the product’s ergonomic design, the PCB and schematic design were compactly crafted, fitting the device into an enclosure without succumbing to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI).

  • Mobile App development

This case study demonstrates the successful navigation of challenges in creating a cutting-edge Dynamometer, providing a singular solution for assessing overall body muscle strength. The incorporation of innovative features showcases the project team’s commitment to delivering a versatile and efficient Assist Aid device for the field of physiotherapy.
